Look at that Sweet Face!

American Pit Bull Terriers were bred for their fighting ability for a long time.  The English Bulldog and a breed of terrier were bred to create a dog that was agile, low to the ground, and had brute strength.  They are bred in all sorts of colors; brindle, red, blue, chocolate, blue brindle, black, piebald, etc.  The AKC American Staffordshire Terrier, is also a pit bull, so don't be fooled by the name.  "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet (Romeo & Juliet)."

Though many pit bulls are still bred for pit fighting, the vast majority of them are now kept as family pets.  Pit bulls are wonderful with children, and if socialized properly, wonderful with other dogs as well.  The American Pit Bull Terrier has a constant look of playfulness on his face.  When you get home from a long day of work, he is waiting at the door for you; tail wagging, ears perked.  Like any other family dog, he makes you glad to be home.
