I wait patiently every day
for you to get home from work,
And I greet you with kisses
And a wagging tail.
I lay curled by your side
While the moon is shining,
To protect you while you sleep.
For it is my will and my duty.
When you cry, I lick your face.
When you laugh, I laugh with you.
I can feel when you are afraid,
and when you are angry.
I was there when you were sick
And stood by your side
Until you were well enough
To be on your own again.
If someone were trying to harm you,
I would die protecting you.
I would sit out in the rain
If it would give you warmth.
I remember how we used to play
With toys and treats and love
And how I used to step in your lap
And kiss you until your face was soaked.
You realize that I'm getting old
And I can't do those things anymore
But that doesn't change how I feel.
You are my best friend.
I love you.
